Are clothing rentals the future of fashion?

If we could, we would have an endless closet that magically re-fills itself with the latest trends and fashions. That’s the dream, right? Unfortunately, most of us don’t have the funds or the closet space to warrant such a magical invention, and we have to deal with a few items every year and a closet that definitely doesn’t resemble Narnia. Because of this, more and more people are turning to clothing rental – but are clothing rentals the future of fashion?

Designer clothes on your doorstep

If you’re a fan of fashion, there’s a high chance that you’re just as obsessed with designer clothing as we are. After all, there’s nothing more exciting than seeing a name you know and love on the inside label of your dress. Of course, unless you’re Blake Lively or Victoria Beckham, there’s little chance that you could don your favorite Gucci gown or your Hermes scarf without taking out a second mortgage on your home. That’s why clothing rental is such a feat of engineering. For a slice of the price, you could have these designer clothes delivered to your doorstep, and they could be yours for a few days. You then send it back, and you keep the fond memories yourself.

Trends come and go

Although we love the fashion world, it’s pretty darn annoying at the same time. One minute animal print is hot, and the next minute it’s not. However, during that time we’ve already stocked up on animal prints galore and have spent a small fortune in the process. By renting our clothes, we get the chance to move with the changing trends rather than straggling behind. You don’t have to worry about wasting your money or having to take a whole load of clothing back to the store because you simply give the clothes back at the end of the rental period. It really is as simple as that.

You save the environment

Did you know that the clothing industry has a mammoth carbon footprint? Perhaps one of the most devastating effects of the clothing industry is that when people are finished with their unwanted clothes they simply throw them in the trash and they are sent to landfill. In order to save the environment and salvage what we have left of the earth, it’s important to ration the amount of waste that goes to landfill – because it often takes thousands of years to decompose. By renting our clothes and keeping them on a temporary basis, we don’t have to worry about this. The clothes are being recycled from one renter to the next, and we are rarely sending these unwanted garments to the landfill site. What could be cooler than saving the world while looking awesome in quirky new threads? Not a lot.

Although it might seem odd to rent out clothing like a car, it seems as though more and more people are getting on board with the trend. It’s cheaper, it’s more environmentally friendly, and it gives you the chance to mix up your outfits a little more. Really, it’s a win-win situation.
