Short-lived celebrity romances: Tara Reid and Tom Brady’s quick love affair has ended shortly after it began, Christina Applegate and Brad Pitt have been together for just a few weeks, Rihanna and Ashton Kutcher have dated when Kutcher was in the middle of his divorce from Demi Moore… Here’s the complete list of celebrity couples who burned out before they even got serious. (19+ photos).
#1: Renée Zellweger and Kenny Chesney
Eight months may not seem like such a long relationship, but for Renée Zellweger and Kenny Chesney, it was enough time to date, get married, and have an annulment. The two lovebirds dated for four months before deciding to tie the knot in 2005. Within four more months, they had the marriage annulled, stating fraud as the reason. With rumors flying around that Chesney might be attracted to men, Zellweger tried to clear things up by saying the term “fraud” was just legal mumbo jumbo.
#2: Ryan Gosling and Sandra Bullock
Before Ryan Gosling was a big-shot Oscar-nominated actor, his name was reasonably unknown on the streets of Hollywood. However, in 2002, when Ryan was in his early 20s and he was just starting to land himself some minor roles, in walked one of the biggest actresses at the time, Sandra Bullock! The pair seemed smitten for a few months when they strutted down the red carpet together, but yet again, their 16 year age gap proved their romance was lust rather than love. They split after a few months of dating.
#3: Brad Pitt and Christina Applegate
If we rewind back to the MTV Movie Awards in September 1989, not only was Paula Abdul number one with her track Cold Hearted, but Brad Pitt was seen strutting down the red carpet with the girl he was dating – Hollywood starlet Christina Applegate. How strange to think! According to rumors, the pair dated for just a few weeks until Christina broke his heart by taking another man to another award ceremony just a week later. How could you, Christina?
#4: Nick Lachey and Kim Kardashian
Here’s another couple who are in the running for one of the strangest celebrity couples. 98′ Degrees band member Nick Lachey and the one and only Kim Kardashian. You might be having a hard time recalling this romance, simply because it didn’t last long at all. In fact, it pretty much only lasted about a week. They dated briefly in 2006 shortly after his very public divorce to fellow singer/actress Jessica Simpson was finalized, and to be honest, we’re rather glad it never fully worked out.
#5: Blake Lively and Leonardo DiCaprio
Okay, we absolutely love the dynamic duo that is Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds – everyone knows that the adorable pair is #couplegoals and that they give the rest of us hope that true love does exist. That being said, we still enjoy reminiscing over the ghosts of boyfriend’s past of the Gossip Girl star. Lively does not have a long list of exes, but she did date the heartthrob Leo DiCaprio for about five months in 2011. After traveling the world together, they eventually split, but supposedly remain friends.
#6: Taylor Swift and Jake Gyllenhaal
This love affair was certainly one for the books. We all remember this duo that was a little random, but cute nonetheless. Jake Gyllenhaal became another boy for Taylor Swift to write songs about and to him, well, he seemed to like the idea of her more than the real T-Swift. In the song titled We are Never Getting Back Together – one that is often rumored to be about Gyllenhaal – you an get a sense of what went on in this short-lived relationship.
#7: Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn
Jennifer Aniston has had her fair share of romances over the years. Yes, when she and Brad Pitt rocked the world by divorcing in 2005 after just five years of marriage, we all began rooting for her to findd that “special someone else.” Fortunately, it seems being on-set with her on-screen husbands is a place for her to find potential romances, because in 2006, she also started dating Vince Vaughn who was her co-star in The Break Up.
#8: Seal and Tyra Banks
World-renowned musician Seal and supermodel Tyra Banks were once the “it” couple when they announced their romance in 2002, and the world became a little bit obsessed. However, it seems Seal must have a bit of a thing for supermodels because the couple split up officially in 2003 shortly after he met his wife Heidi Klum. According to Seal, it was absolutely love at first sight, and he just knew he had to be with the German supermodel. So I suppose that meant a swift goodbye to Tyra then?
#9: Jack Antonoff and Scarlett Johannson
During their fresh-faced teens and around the time when they were both 17 or 18, Hollywood actress and musician Jack Antonoff had a budding relationship that was destined for great things. They met while studying at PCS (Professional Children’s School), and from 2001 to late 2002, the pair’s romance seemed unbreakable. However, it was cut short when both stars decided to focus on their careers instead. It was probably a smart move seen as Johansson is now a BAFTA-winner, and Antonoff has won four Grammys.
#10: Chris Evans and Jessica Biel
Although the romance between Chris Evans and Jessica Biel lasted over several years, it was, however, described as “on-off.” The pair clearly couldn’t fully say goodbye to each other for over five years from 2001 to 2006 – but Hollywood was telling them to “just break up already!” Thankfully greater things came for both actors after they decided to call it quits. Evans is now Captain America, and Biel is happily married to one of the world’s most sought-after bachelors, Justin Timberlake.
#11: Britney Spears and Colin Farrell
While we’re still scratching our heads over this one, it did happen so you can rest assured knowing you read it correctly. Yes, pop star Britney Spears and bad boy Colin Farrell did go out on a date in 2003 and were spotted out and about a few times that year. Farrell claims he was just a young single guy trying to have a good time, but apparently Britney was looking to get back together more than a decade later. It must have been a pretty significant experience for her.
#12: Ashley Olsen and Lance Armstrong
Lance Armstrong may have destroyed his cycling career due to doping allegations, but he certainly does have an impressive dating history. His former girlfriends include singer Sheryl Crow and designer Tory Burch. There is also a very famous woman that he has been linked to, but the romance was not as well-known. Child star turned fashion icon Ashley Olsen and Lance Armstrong were together for a few months in 2007, but supposedly the 15 year age difference got to be too much and the relationship was short-lived.
#13: Megan Fox and Robert Pattinson
This one is just a rumor, but we’ll let you decide. Right around the time Megan Fox and Brian Green allegedly took a little break from their engagement, Fox was said to have bragged about a quick fling with none other than vampire legend, Robert Pattinson. Right after the alleged affair, Fox said Pattinson is too pretty and she’s not interested. Sources say the only reason she said this is because she was hurt after Pattinson rejected her. She has since returned to Green and they have three children.
#14: Kate Hudson and Justin Timberlake
Rumor has it that Kate Hudson and Justin Timberlake had a very brief thing at a New Year’s Eve party in 2007. This was only days after he split with longtime girlfriend Cameron Diaz. Diaz was not so thrilled when she heard the news, but in the end she got back at Kate with a perfectly plotted revenge plan: she dated her ex A-Rod a few years later.
#15: Rihanna and Ashton Kutcher
Ashton Kutcher was in the midst of his divorce with Demi Moore when rumors began spreading that he was seeing none other than pop princess Rihanna. The singer was spotted arriving at Kutcher’s residence right around midnight and then leaving at about 4AM. We are not here to make any accusations – maybe the two were just meeting up for a late night business deal. Afterward, sources exposed an eight week fling, but Rihanna shut down rumors. The world may never know what went actually went on between the two.
#16: Naya Rivera and David Spade
People were shocked when photos were leaked of funnyman David Spade and Glee’s Naya Rivera snuggling up to each other in a pool back in March 2017. Sources announced that the two had been seeing each other for a few weeks and they seemed to be very happy together. It would appear, however, that things never really took off in their relationship because the two were only spotted a few times after that and by August 2017, the split was confirmed. Spade has since been spotted with another mystery woman.
#17: Nicole Kidman and Lenny Kravitz
Big Little Lies is currently in production of its second season and has become quite a hit with critics and viewers. Some behind the scenes dirt, however, is that Nicole Kidman (Celeste) actually dated one of the other star’s father in real life. Kidman was actually secretly engaged to Zoë Kravitz’s (Bonnie) dad, iconic musician Lenny Kravitz, between 2002 and 2003, so the two already knew each other pretty well before meeting again on the set of the show.
#18: Tara Reid and Tom Brady
In 2002, there was plenty of speculation that American Pie’s sweetheart Tara Reid and football superstar Tom Brady had a fling. It took twelve long years, but Reid finally admitted that there was something there. On a talk show in 2014, the Sharknado actress claimed that she kissed Brady back in the day. It was said that for about a month the two dated, but as things go, the relationship sizzled out. We wonder how his model wife Gisele feels about her husband dating one of Hollywood’s biggest party girls.
#19: Janet Jackson and Matthew McConaughey
Matthew McConaughey claims they were just good friends and that she’s a very nice lady, but Janet Jackson has said there was a bit more to the story. While we may never know the full extent of what went on between these two back in 2002, one thing is clear: age differences ain’t got nothing on them and they would have made one attractive couple. Since their quick little tryst, both have moved on and gotten married – McConaughey to model Camila Alves and Jackson to Qatari billionaire Wissam Al Mana.
#20: Emilia Clarke and Seth MacFarlane
Though it took her years to open up a bit about this relationship, you might remember that Emilia Clarke dated Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane for about six months between 2012 to 2013. Whether it was dating in the spotlight or the long distance, the two split, but still remain friends. An obnoxious fan once approached them and explained that he was a huge fan of hers and he did not understand why she was with Seth. The Game of Thrones actress did not appreciate that, to say the least.
#21: Kim Kardashian and Nick Cannon
Nick Cannon may not be one of Kim Kardashian’s most well-known relationships (she didn’t marry him like Kanye or make a “home video” with him like Ray J), but the pair were a couple briefly toward the end of 2006. As it turns out, her previous relationship with Ray J affected her new one with Cannon and was part of the reason they broke up. Kim allegedly lied to Nick stating that there was no video, but the leaked footage proved otherwise. Because of the dishonesty, things ended between them.
#22: Helen Hunt and Matthew Broderick
Matthew Broderick has been married to love of his life Sarah Jessica Parker since 1997, but before that he had a few flings with various actresses. One that he was quite smitten with was Helen Hunt. The two dated briefly while Broderick was becoming a household name in 1987 and Hunt was already also making a name for herself. They may not have had a long love, but they did remain friends after the split, so at least things seem to have ended amicably..
#23: Madonna and Michael Jackson
This could have been the greatest love affair of all time between the King and Queen of Pop, but it was actually only one date. Madonna and Michael Jackson showed up to the 1991 Oscars together, though they were not spotted out again after that. She did, however, admit to James Cordon in a 2016 Carpool Karaoke episode that she and MJ shared a kiss, so we can rest easy knowing that these two music icons were more than friends for at least a few minutes, maybe more.
Hilary Duff and Shia LaBeouf
Apparently one date was all it took for Shia LaBeouf and Hilary Duff to realize they were not meant for each other. According to LaBeouf, it was one of the worst dates that either of them had ever been on. It would appear that the former Disney Channel stars just didn’t hit it off as well as they thought they might. The actor did, however, state that he and Megan Fox got along much better…while she was still with Brian Austin Green!
Kristen Bell and Matthew Morrison
Nowadays, she’s married to funnyman and Parenthood actor Dax Shepard, but in college, Kristen Bell had a brief affair of the heart with Mr. Glee, Matthew Morrison. They attended NYU’s Tisch school for the arts and dated very briefly before either of them became famous. She says that aside from him being perfect for the role of Will Schuester, he was her favorite part of the musical sitcom anyway. Bell has also made quite a name for herself and currently stars on the critically acclaimed show Good Place.
Carmen Electra and Simon Cowell
A couple months doesn’t seem like a meaningful relationship, but we’re still talking about this one over five years after it happened. Carmen Electra is known as one of the most intriguing women in Hollywood, but that didn’t stop Simon Cowell from allegedly cheating on her. The two were only together for about two months in 2012/2013 before she found him with another woman – his current partner, Lauren Silverman, who was married at the time of their affair. Electra wasn’t having any of this, and ditched Cowell immediately.
Julia Roberts and Matthew Perry
Even though their relationship did not end so great (she abandoned him in a restroom without his clothes) in the episode of Friends that she guest appeared on, it would appear that sparks did fly offset. Julia Roberts and Matthew Perry were spotted on quite a few dates throughout 1996 after meeting on the show. It seems like the one Miss Chanandler Bong had more luck in real life landing the girl than his character did on Friends.
Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds
Here’s another one that is admittedly just a rumor, that we – and all of the other Proposal fans out there – really hope is true. Again, we still can’t get over how cute Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively are together, but the past is the past regardless. Sandra Bullock and the Deadpool star were said to have dated briefly sometime throughout 2011. Neither of them have fessed up about this and claim they’re just friends, but you have to admit, their chemistry was undeniable in film and interviews.
Cher and Tom Cruise
Cher is known for many things, mostly for being half of the most iconic musical duo of all time – Sonny and Cher. She has also had not a long list, but a good list of flames throughout her life. Who might be in her top five? Well, we only know one because she still refuses to expose the others. Tom Cruise makes the list! Back in the ’80s when she was already a huge star and he was just starting out, the two had a quick, but apparently memorable fling.
Seth McFarlane and Amanda Bynes
They often say that if you want to find someone to spend the rest of your life with, then you should find someone who makes you laugh. With Family Guy creator and child prodigy Amanda Bynes both having extra-large funny bones, surely things could have gone from strength to strength when their romance was announced in 2008? Well, sadly not, because the 12 year age difference was too much of a burden and they split after a few weeks. However, they do win the award for the most strangely surprising couple!
Scott Disick and Bella Thorne
As another member of the Kardashian clan, Scott Disick knows how much tabloid headlines and love-interest speculations can affect your publicity. So when it was rumored that he was dating childhood Disney-star Bella Thorne in 2017, the paps and tabloids were all over the story. The story stemmed from the moment they were seen frolicking and flirting together in Cannes, France, and although they both deny they were “just friends,” we can’t imagine that it did stay just that.
Tom Hiddleston and Taylor Swift
International pop star Taylor Swift sure knows how to turn her whirlwind love-life into a great tune, and back in May 2016, her short-lived romance with British actor Tom Hiddleston suggested that she’s for sure the hopeless romantic she says she is. The pair were frequently seen out and about together over the course of the summer, but by September, the couple dubbed “Hiddleswift” were officially over. The world was rooting for them, but unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be.
Tom Green and Drew Barrymore
When comedian Tom Green and actress Drew Barrymore announced their engagement in early 2001, we were all a bit shocked. They just didn’t seem a likely couple. However, we soon ate our own words, and the world watched the pair marry in July 2011. In the first few months of their marriage, they both looked completely and utterly in love during their public appearances. However, it was super short-lived when they filed for divorce just five months later in October.
Russell Brand and Katy Perry
Comedian/author Russell Brand and mega-star singer Katy Perry are another couple the world didn’t seem coming from a mile off, but yet whenever they were together, we could see the sparkle in their eyes . They were definitely in love. However, after tying the knot in October 2010 after just a few months of dating, the couple’s romance started to crumble right away. Sadly, they filed for divorce in December 2011, and the rest of us have also tried to forget it ever happened.
Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston
Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson were rumored to have a romantic relationship when they starred in the 2008’s hit tear-jerker Marley & Me. Their on-screen chemistry during filming was palpable by all those who witnessed it, and it wasn’t long before they sparked rumors about whether their on-screen romance was turning into something far more real. At the time, the world stood watching anxiously, hoping that Aniston had finally found her prince charming, but unfortunately, their flirting never went anywhere serious.
Moby and Natalie Portman
The ins and outs of this celebrity couple are rather skeptical, because earlier this year, Portman claimed they never dated at all. In fact, she describes Moby’s behavior way back in 2001 as “a little bit creepy.” However, in his published memoir, he definitely recalls them dating, and he especially remembers feeling overwhelmed by the flirtatious attention because he knew at the time he was “way out of her league.” With Portman now saying she’s confused by his story, I guess we’ll never know whether they genuinely dated or not.
Rhys Ifans and Sienna Miller
Another couple who once got the tabloids talking was British stars Sienna Miller and Rhys Ifans. The pair started dating back in 2007, and according to rumors at the time, they were “getting pretty serious.” However, Miller now claims that she wasn’t ready to settle down at the time, and although they got along really well, she decided to call it a day after just a few months of dating. Ifans was said to have been heartbroken about the split.
Wesley Snipes and Jennifer Lopez
J-Lo was the name on everyone’s lips in the late ’90s. She was the girl-next-door who could sing, act, dance, and stand there looking a million dollars. However, during the years in which she was starting to make a big name for herself, J-Lo actually dated the iconic actor, Wesley Snipes. Bet you didn’t know that, did you? The pair were seen together for a few months, but ultimately it wasn’t meant to be. Although, it’s thought that they remained close friends after.
Michelle Rodriguez and Zac Efron
Anyone would be lucky to have a date with Zac Efron for obvious reasons and the same can be said about Michelle Rodriguez. The two came together in 2014 and had a summer full of fun and that was about it for the Lost and Fast and Furious actress. Throughout the two month flame, Efron knew that the relationship wasn’t going to last, but he fell a bit for Rodriguez and apparently didn’t take the split well. Who knew he was such a romantic?
Ray J and Whitney Houston
The last few months of the late Whitney Houston’s life are a tragic time to look back on for anyone. After passing away in February 2012, the world stood still mourning the loss of such a talent, and one person who felt particularly heartbroken was her boyfriend at the time – the musician Ray J. The pair were rumored to have been dating for a few weeks, and after her funeral, Ray J delved a little deeper into their romance, explaining how they were “seeing each other for a while” and that she “meant the world” to him.
