How to be more successful at work

It is easy to find yourself getting a little stagnant at work and perhaps it is time to shake things up a little and become more successful. Here are some things you can start doing today to impress your boss, become more productive and overall respected in your field.

Be timely

This sounds like an obvious one, but you would be surprised at how many people really push their luck when it comes to getting to work on time. Show up a little early when possible as it will look good to your boss. If you come in late, don’t think that staying late will make up for it. Your boss will appreciate it much more if you get in on time (or even early!) than if you do the same hours (or even more) but rock up late every day.

Dress up

Even if you can get away with slightly more casual outfits at work, try dressing more formally. Not only will it show your boss that you are serious about your job, but it will also make you feel more powerful and confident which will translate into how you work.

Chat with your CEO

Remember that your boss is a human being and although they might seem a little scary, there is nothing wrong with saying hi if you see them in the hallway. Don’t brown nose too much, or be fake, just speak to them genuinely and make sure they know who you are.

Schedule a power hour

It’s so easy to get distracted when working, if not by social media and co-workers then by answering emails. Make sure you give yourself an hour where you focus on nothing but the task at hand and really hammer out that project. You will feel accomplished, and it is the most efficient way to work.

Take a proper lunch break

So many of us are in the bad habit of eating at our desks because we are so bogged down with work. You may think that it shows dedication to your boss, but you can actually be much more creative by taking some time away from your desk. Even if it is just for 15 minutes, take a proper lunch break, away from your computer. If you eat lunch with your coworkers, it has also been shown to improve your performance as a team, so that’s a great reason to go out for some tasty food together next lunchtime!

Find a mentor

It can be difficult to ask for help sometimes, but it can be really beneficial. Find a peer mentor in your organization who will give you feedback on your work and help push you. You can make this a mutually beneficial arrangement by offering the same to your mentor. They don’t have to be someone higher than you in the office hierarchy, and they could even be someone on a different team, it is more about the support and guidance they can offer you.

Making a conscious decision to become more successful is the first step to doing it. It is not something that will happen overnight and will take constant work towards your goals, but when you reach them, you will feel a real sense of achievement. Good luck!
