Unless you have billions of dollars to make your home exactly how you want it, there’s always going to be something in your apartment or house that you wish you could change. It might be the location, it might be the number of bedrooms, or it might be the size of some of the rooms. But despite the common phrase, size really DOESN’T matter because you can trick your own eyes to believe something is bigger than it seems. Including your tiny living room.
Cover your living room in mirrors
Okay, don’t cover your WHOLE living room in mirrors. Or you can if you want. But it might get a bit confusing. Interior designers have been using mirrors to make a space look bigger for years, and it is one of the most common tricks of the trade. By adding a mirror to the center or focal point of your room, you are not only adding extra light, but you are also creating the illusion that there is more space in the room than there is, as it will reflect the main space in front of it, rather than a blank wall. If you can, also add a mirror opposite a window, as this will offer you even more light and space, creating the illusion your living room is huge.
Use neutral colors
If you have a small living room, it can often be easy to want to fill it with bright colors, in-your-face paint and feature walls to hide the fact it is small. However, this just makes a tiny living room look even tinier. The best way to use color in a tiny living room is to use neutral colors on the walls, ceilings, and furnishings. This does not necessarily have to be white, though. You can also use beiges, creams, and off-whites to adorn your living room. These colors will give the illusion that the walls are further away than they are, making the whole room look bigger. These soft colors also reflect light better than bright or dark colors – which we all know is the perfect way to create larger spaces.
Use small-scale furniture
This one is kind of a no-brainer. If you’ve only got a small space, you shouldn’t fill it all with large and hefty heavy-duty furniture. Instead, use small-scale furniture that has small arms, and cushions to leave space for open flooring and walls. If you can, avoid buying large, multiple seater couches. Rather than these large couches, opt for small armchairs, love seats or a small sofa with one long back cushion, instead of a multi-cushion back.
Draw your attention upward
When you’re looking at any room, it can be easy to see it as four walls and a floor and focus solely on furnishing and painting these aspects. However, your living room is multi-faceted and includes another space – the ceiling. If you already have a high ceiling, you can add that extra bit of space to make your tiny living room look larger. If you don’t have a high ceiling, purchasing floor-to-ceiling drapes and fitting them in your living room will add more vertical space.
Choose lightweight furniture
As much as it can be easy to choose the comfiest and most likable furniture, these are normally very heavy visually. When you go furniture shopping, it’s important to think about your tiny living room and what will make it look bigger. More often than not, choosing lightweight furniture will do this. This can include glass coffee tables, thin and light wooden chairs and dining table, and light colored furnishings.
So if you’ve got a tiny living room, follow these rules, and it’ll seem like you have a whole load of extra space in no time!
