Actors from Moonlighting: a closer look

Moonlighting was a huge success during the mid to late ‘80s. The comedy-drama was a hit with audiences and helped to give a career boost to many of the stars. It starred Cybill Shepherd as Maddie Hayes and Bruce Willis as David Addison. Willis was a relative unknown when he stepped on set, but by the end of the show’s fifth season, he was a huge movie star, starring in blockbusting movies. It also helped to give Shepherd’s career a jumpstart after her initial success in the ‘70s slowed down. Although the show was successful, the two stars were struggling to find a way to get along with each other.

A breakdown in the relationship between Shepherd and Willis led to tensions behind the scenes for many of the crew members. It was a struggle to remain focused on what was already a pretty chaotic show. It was rumored that the ink on the scripts was barely dry by the time the actors were in front of a camera on set. Scripts were finished just hours before filming began which meant the actors had to learn their lines in super quick time. We have uncovered many of the backstage tensions and real-life events from many of the stars’ lives.

David Addison is the fearless detective that runs the show at the Blue Moon agency before Maddie strolls in. He tries to convince Maddie that the agency is not supposed to make any money and she should act as his business partner. Willis was one of 2,000 people who auditioned for the role, but once the casting crew spotted Willis, they knew they had found their guy. The network, ABC, however, were worried that people wouldn’t believe there was any kind of romantic tension between the main actors. It seemed as though Addison made it his life’s goal to get under the skin of his attractive new boss.
