In 1962, ‘The Beverly Hillbillies’ – a sitcom about a rural family moving to upper-class Beverly Hills – began airing, and quickly became one of TV’s most popular shows. The show centered around the misadventures of the Clampett family as they tried to adjust to high society – and things were just as chaotic off-screen as they were on-screen.

Despite being very popular with the public, ‘The Beverly Hillbillies’ was regularly subjected to harshly negative appraisal from reviewers. TV critics felt that the show relied on coarse, lowest-common-denominator, pandering to – and even encouraging – an attitude of ignorance that they felt was extremely detrimental.
Although some critics gave it kudos for becoming so popular, the show maintained a poor critical reputation throughout its run.
