In 1995, Chris Farley and a large portion of the standing ‘SNL’ cast were let go by NBC. The decision had been made due to the fact that, for the last few seasons, ‘SNL’ had come under increasing fire for being unfunny, and had lost a significant amount of viewers.
Although the cast was due to be almost entirely overhauled, Farley did in fact leave of his own accord. He was starting to get tired with acting on ‘SNL’, and was not particularly interested in sticking around.
