When the show first aired on September 22, 1976, the producers and the network were so surprised by the high ratings that they decided to re-run the show to make sure the numbers weren’t a mistake.
They then got another shock just a few days later when it turned out that the high ratings were, of course, not a fluke at all. Then, as the first season continued, the ratings began to rise even more. Why were they surprised about it being a hit in the first place? How stupid.
