With Charlie only ever being heard through a speaker-com, at first, producers weren’t so bothered about who played the character. In fact, they often let John Forsythe read his lines from his own home in his pajamas.
However, before Forsythe landed the role, there was another actor who was cast – his name was Gig Young. Producers loved his voice at first, but when he turned up on his first day intoxicated, they immediately fired him and rang Forsythe’s agent instead.
