This highly significant character was in the show from the beginning until season nine. As the Judge Advocate General of the Navy, Chegwidden was respected by all of his colleagues, many of whom looked up to him as a fatherly figure.
When he decided to retire in season nine, it left the whole team in shock to see their friend walk out of the door for the last time. John had already landed a few minor acting roles, but playing Chegwidden saw his career really take off (excuse the pun).
