According to the book, Brooke’s mom had a love for drinking that rivaled her affection for her daughter. Her problems would often see her disappear for days at a time, and even become verbally abusive with her child.
Shields knew her mom wasn’t a bad person – she referred to the woman as having a “kind soul” – but that didn’t make things any easier to deal with. Eventually, the addiction became too much for both of them, and they drifted apart. However, they later found their way back to one another.
