Few scientists are able to not only crack the science world but also crack the world of popular culture. However, Stephen Hawking managed to do that. This British scientist defied the laws of physics and medicine when he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in his early 20s. Although he was given just a few years to live, he later went on to have a fulfilling and successful career as a theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and all-around legend. He sadly passed away in March 2018 in his home, surrounded by his family.
