In the initial drafts of the show, the premise had the Clampetts striking oil on their property, and moving to New York with their new riches. The idea was that the Clampetts’ rural ways would be perfectly offset by the big city.
However, it soon became clear that it was going to cost the show too much money to film in New York – and as a result, the location of the show was moved to an upper-class neighborhood in Beverly Hills, California instead.
