Despite it being his most iconic role, it almost seemed as if Buddy Ebsen might never play Jed Clampett. Before being approached by the creators of ‘The Beverly Hillbillies’, Ebsen was getting ready to retire from acting – but was asked to play Jed Clampett just before doing so.
Paul Henning was keen on having Ebsen play Jed because he had just seen him in ‘Breakfast at Tiffanys’, playing the role of Doc Golightly – and felt he was perfect for the part of Jed.
