Originally, Jed Clampett’s character was going to be less perceptive than he is in the show – hewing closer to Jethro’s character and the ‘fish out of water’ premise of the show. However, Ebsen was not happy with this character choice, wanting Jed to be sharper and more intelligent than he seemed at first glance.
As such, all of the lines designed to make someone look foolish were piled onto Jethro instead, cementing his place as the dunce of the show. We’re sure Max Baer wasn’t thrilled with the decision.
