One of the other tough subjects that Mister Rogers took on was that of racial discrimination. In the 1960s, there were incidents where African Americans were not allowed to share public pools with white people. Rogers decided to use an episode of his show to do his own small protest, by inviting the character Officer Clemmons, an African American police officer, to dip his feet in the same pool with him. Even more poignant, at the end Rogers dries off Clemmons feet for him, making a big, yet subtle, statement for the time.
