Fred Rogers seemed to intuitively know just the right way to speak to children, but a lot of what he knew he learned from the experts. In the 1950s a wave of psychologists and doctors began exploring early childhood development, and Rogers joined in to learn about that field. He had a particularly strong relationship with the renowned child psychologist, Margaret McFarland, and would spend hours consulting with her about the show. Sometimes he would even ask her advice mid-shoot to make sure it would be just right for his young viewers.
