Joaquin Phoenix and his siblings, River, Rain, Liberty, and Summer, were born into a religious cult called the Children of God, where they would travel throughout South America.
By the time Joaquin was four years old, however, his parents decided to leave the group and the family returned to the U.S. aboard a cargo ship that sailed from Venezuela. This is also when the family changed their last name from Bottom to Phoenix, to symbolize their new beginning.
