According to James’ interview, neither he nor Diana ever intended to have an affair. They apparently couldn’t help falling in love with each other, something which occurred because of “the circumstances throwing [them] together.”
It supposedly wasn’t his or her fault that they came to have an affair; things just developed naturally because of their mutual connection. The pair were reportedly so smitten that Hewitt envisioned the two of them spending the rest of their lives together. However, it seems that their love just simply wasn’t meant to be.
