The most feminist things Meghan Markle ever said

Most people know Meghan Markle for what she became in May 2018, a British royal. The current Duchess of Sussex is a former actress, and even before she gained more international fame for her connection to the British royal family, she was an outspoken advocate for gender equality, women’s rights, and empowerment.

A self-confessed feminist, she’s not afraid to speak up for things she believes should be addressed. Over the years, she has used her exposure and opportunities to be a champion for women through various forums and organizations. Her recent inclusion into the royal family probably means good things for her feminist endeavors because her new title as Duchess of Sussex giving her the biggest platform yet to fight for what she believes in. She has voiced her thoughts on feminism on various occasions, and below are some of her most powerful quotes.

1. “Feminism is about fairness.”

This was quoted from her speech at the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New Zealand. It’s a simple reminder that the fight for the inclusion of women and the fight for their empowerment and rights is not about competing or ‘overthrowing’ men, as many would perceive. Instead, feminism is just a way of seeking to get fairness to all women, to the extent that they will not be discriminated against in society on the basis of their gender.

2. “There’s no uniform for feminism.”

People have a certain perception of feminists, and a successful beautiful actress turned royal just does not fit the frame. However, according to Meghan, anybody can be a feminist so long as they have the drive to help bring about equality among the genders.

3. “Women don’t need to find their voice”

The rest of the sentence is “They need to be empowered to use it and people need to be encouraged to listen.” Disagreeing with people working for women’s equality who say that they’re helping women find their voice, Meghan says that all women need is empowerment to use their voice, and for society to be ready to listen to what they have to say.

4. “No matter what you look like, you should be taken seriously.”

Meghan is once again touching on the assumption that feminists have a specific look, and rejecting traditional ideas of what women are “supposed” to look like.

5. “You’re enough just as you are.”

These words come from an essay that she wrote on her blog, The Tig. Here, she’s reminding women that they do not have to have somebody by their side to feel complete. Many societies have this perception, so it’s a great reminder to women that they’re sufficient and should not feel the pressure to seek any sort of crutch.

Another great saying is “Women make up more than half of the world’s population. It is neither just nor practical for their voices, for our voices, to go unheard at the highest levels of decision making.” Here, she states exactly why it is important for feminists to continue doing what they do until women finally get their fair share of the cake.

With a feminist streak that started as early as when she was 11 and wrote letters to stop a soap commercial that targeted only women, Meghan Markle clearly is still working to further her cause.
