Throughout the trial Anna also tried to defend her actions by blaming the men she was trying to get money from. As a young woman in the competitive and prestigious New York socialite scene, Anna claimed she was worried the powerful people willing to invest in her club would try to take advantage of her as a young, unestablished woman.
She wanted to make sure they didn’t take her idea and make it their own project, which is yet another reason she felt the need to use the methods she did.
