What did Gossip Girl teach us about fashion?

It may have been six long years since the last episode of Gossip Girl aired, but we haven’t forgotten all the life-long fashion lessons the show has taught us. It’s not just the iconic lines the show gave us such as, “I’m not a stop along the way, I’m a destination,” or, “Paris is always a good idea,” it’s the amazing clothes all the cast wore as well that made the show so memorable.

If you are in need of some tips on dressing up that you can use for the rest of your life, here are the best things Blair Waldorf and Serena Van Der Woodsen taught us.

Have a signature accessory to always ‘stand out’

Almost all the characters in the show had a signature accessory or look which could be seen in all their outfits. For instance, Serena could almost always be found in blazers or coats or with over-sized purses. Blair’s signature accessory, on the other hand, was definitely her headband. Even the men had a signature look; for Chuck Bass, it was the power scarf.

Go short on holidays

If you’re on holiday, make sure you wear shorts or skirts or short dresses. It makes sense too. The shorter the hemline, the easier it is to tan evenly and show off your tan. When Blair and Serena were on holiday, they were always stylish, even with a shorter hemline and minimal accessories.

Tights are not pants. Period.

Thanks to the iconic scene where Blair Waldorf so lovingly taught us that tights are not pants, it’s safe to say that this is one fashion lesson we will never, ever forget. Neither tights, nor leggings for that matter, can pass as pants.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match

Gossip Girl taught us not to be timid in experimenting with fashion. There were many times when they mixed and matched prints and patterns, colors and styles, and as we all know, it all turned out fabulous.

Don’t forget to accessorize

Accessories can glam up any look, even if your clothes are plain. Whether it’s a chunky bracelet, a belt, a scarf, a headband, a statement necklace or choker, or a bag, make sure you have plenty to spice up any outfit in minutes.

Outerwear does not have to be basic and boring

Outerwear such as trench coats and blazers were often worn in the show, and if this taught us anything, it’s that they don’t have to be boring colors like beige or black. Jenny wore pink coats, and we all know how cute that looked.

There is no doubt that Gossip Girl was ahead of its time regarding the use fashion and accessories in a television show. Centered in Manhattan, the dream of every fashionista, she introduced us to the glamorous world of the rich and the famous, and of course to their great clothes. We can never thank enough to Blair Waldorf and Serena Van Der Woodsen for showing us how to live. And remember, Paris is always a good idea.
