Teddy stated that he loved his girlfriend dearly, but like every normal couple, they do argue from time to time. He didn’t like the thought of the petty little arguments getting in between them, so came up with a way that meant they could break the ice.
By doing this, both of them could laugh it off and have a chance to settle down before talking out the argument properly. This isn’t a way of brushing things under the rug, but it helps mellow the conversation.
