Melanie was born and raised in New Zealand – apart from a year spent living in England – where she was heavily involved with acting in and running the productions put on by her high school. Director Peter Jackson visited Melanie’s school where he cast her as the lead in his movie, Heavenly Creatures, when she was just 16 years old. Melanie didn’t act again throughout high school to focus on her grades but made her grand return when she was 18 years old.
