To make matters even more confusing, the FBI also has very little evidence to go on. While the authorities collected numerous pieces of DNA and other forms of evidence from the crime scene when the event occurred, the FBI decided that they wanted to retest it in 2010.
Although they hoped that their new technology would lead them right to the men in question, their plans were scuppered when the evidence surrounding this case was also discovered to be missing. Nobody knows when or how this evidence went walkabout.
