After moving back to New York in 1858, Isabella spent her time catching up with old friends, and one particular trip took her to Boston to meet up with Julia Gardner. It was during this catch-up that she was introduced to Julia’s brother, a man by the name of John “Jack” Lowell Gardner Jr.
As a member of the American elite and a hugely successful banker, Jack Gardner was a hugely attractive bachelor – and in more ways than one. They started seeing more and more of each other, and they became husband and wife in 1860.
