After an impressive and heart-wrenching life, Isabella Stewart Gardner sadly passed away in 1924. She had been able to see her museum flourish for two decades, and she was over the moon to see so many people enjoy it.
However, she knew that she wanted the museum to stay open on the event of her passing, and her will stated that the museum would be maintained in exactly the way that she left it. This meant that no new paintings were allowed to be placed in the museum, and none were allowed to leave. And none did, until that dark St. Patrick’s Day in 1990.
