Eden reported that she eventually had to resort to tough love to try and get through to her son. The actress told her son that he was not to live with her while he was using illegal substances, and he was given an ultimatum – it was them or her.
Matthew chose the drugs and ended up leaving her home. Both Eden and Ansara were frantic in their searches for their son in an attempt to bring him the help he so desperately needed.
