Eden would find her first public opportunity to sing would be with the church choir of which she was a member. The choir gave her a chance to sing solos, helping to boost her confidence. After becoming a teenager, Eden would sing at nightclubs for local bands charging them $10 per night.
Already learning how to make money in show business, young Eden went on to study singing at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, while studying acting on the side.

After graduating from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1949, Eden then went on to study theatre for a year at City College of San Francisco. Deciding to pursue a new challenge, Eden entered the Miss San Francisco pageant and won the title!
She won under the name Barbara Huffman in 1951 and went on to compete in the Miss California pageant. It seemed set that a life of glamor and glitzy costumes were in this star’s future.
