In vitro fertilization wasn’t around when the couple were trying to conceive as IVF wasn’t invented until late in the ‘70s – twenty years too late for the couple. Still, it was a major breakthrough in the medical world and would go on to change thousands of people’s lives.
The process involves taking reproductive cells from both the man and the woman which are fertilized together outside the body; this creates a zygote. The zygote can then be inserted into the woman where, all being well, it will grow into a baby.

Regardless of their trauma over not being able to have children of their own, the couple still managed to have a healthy and loving marriage. The letter wasn’t easily found when Tony was cleaning through the cabinet as it had been pushed to the back of one of the drawers.
