After appearing in 2000 comedy What Women Want, alongside Mel Gibson, Tomei found herself in yet another standout movie. In the Bedroom is a 2001 crime drama and a departure from Tomei’s classic comedy roles she had so far been best-known for.
The drama was nominated for five Oscars, and Tomei’s performance earned her the second Academy Award nomination of her career. She didn’t win the title that year, but once again, the critics were aware of just how good she could be in the right role.
