When the clips were played to several speech experts, with years of experience in the field, their opinions were curiously divided. While some were definitely hearing Duchess Meghan speaking with a British accent, others weren’t convinced. Phonetics and pronunciation specialist Dr Geoff Lindsey conceded that it seems like her accent has changed a bit, “at least in some settings.”
The differences were subtle, he added, but they were there. When Meghan asked, “Did you make that for us?” her intonation was perceptively British. Sociolinguist Dr. Ella Jeffries, meanwhile, wasn’t sure she heard any traces of a British accent. Another sociolinguist, Professor Paul Kerswill, was even less convinced, saying “there really isn’t much to go on.”
