One thing experts could agree on, however, was that if there was a change in Meghan’s accent, it was there to serve a purpose. Whether consciously or otherwise, she was mimicking her surroundings. And these days, her surroundings was the Royal Family. It’s this environment that led her to develop a “very English-aristocratic (style) for interacting with the public,” said Dr. Marisa Brook, an assistant linguistics professor.
When meeting the public, Dr. Brook said, she’s being judged instantaneously. Developing that upper-class accent, then, helps her pass muster. Even if it was conscious, she explained, it didn’t make her a poser. She likened the change in accent to a change of wardrobe – she was putting on something fancy to fit in.
