This seem like a charming, odd little custom that makes the royals seem a little more down to earth. Too bad nobody told Princess Diana about it!
Her first Christmas together with the royals, the late Princess of Wales went to enormous trouble – and expense – to buy pricey gifts like cashmere sweaters and mohair scarves. Since everyone opens their gifts in front of the entire family, when they saw what Diana got everyone they all thought it was hilarious. Well, all except her, anyway, leaving her red in the face.
