There was a time, not too long ago, where homes were heated and appliances were powered using a different energy source – coal! It is rare to see coal nowadays – unless you are a pizza chef or your name is on Santa’s “bad list” – but if you have come across the black rocks you know just how messy they can be. Coal chutes were a direct tunnel where coal was shovelled in and went directly to the basement to be tossed in the fire. This clever system saved a lot of heavy-lifting and spared a mess throughout the house.
