In many older houses and apartments, there are two staircases: one at the front and one in the back. Believe it or not, the second staircase was often reserved for the help. This reduced traffic in the main rooms of the house as they were often moving up and down the stairs delivering food, collecting laundry, and cleaning up. But also, and perhaps more importantly, the staircase kept the servants out of sight of the homeowners and house guests.
