Heavy, wooden shutters were used as a filter on glass doors and windows. The pattern of the shutters block some natural light from getting inside without completely blacking out the room. Much like a screen, they also allow for air to circulate in and out of the house without providing a wide open path for animals and insects to get inside. Nowadays, screens and curtains are seen as far more functional and fashionable alternatives when compared to traditional shutters.
