These handy contraptions can still sometimes be found on multi-level restaurants to help take some weight off the servers’ shoulders. Dumbwaiters act like little elevators – you simply place something inside such as a platter of food and send it upward or downward to a different floor of the building. Dumbwaiters can now function with the same technology as an elevator, but back in the day they were controlled using a manual lever and pulley system.
