The Tamaya 1 was destined to arrive along with its cargo to Dakar, the capital of the African country of Senegal far to the north of Liberia.
Contact with it was lost, however, as it was sailing near Gambia, just south of its destination. How the ship got to Liberia was not initially clear, although local authorities did note several of the vessel’s lifeboats were missing. In fact, it wasn’t even clear how many crewmen the ship had to begin with.
