Pirates are a growing problem in Africa, most famously near Somalia and the Horn of Africa, as depicted in the famous Tom Hanks movie Captain Phillips, which was inspired by the real-life hijacking of the Maersk Alabama in 2009.
Although today the fight against pirates has been successful, and no major vessels or hostages remain in their captivity, for the better part of 15 years they terrorized the seas around Africa. It was therefore theorized that the crew of the Tamaya 1 may have been kidnapped – or worse.
