Basinger grew up in Athens, Georgia with four other siblings. She was a self-professed shy girl growing up and hated even the thought of public speaking. She said she had no interest in doing any sort of theater or acting. She was a member of the cheerleading team at Clarke Central High School. Basinger competed in beauty pageants throughout high school and was discovered by agents at the Ford Modeling Agency after they spotted her in an ad. She moved to New York City after graduation.
