Cates was born and raised in New York City. Her father, Joseph, was a prominent Broadway producer. She attended the prestigious all-girls Hewitt School and later graduated from the Professional Children’s School, a school designed especially for aspiring young actors, dancers, and singers. After a brief stint in modeling, Cates changed paths to pursue film and TV. Her first role came at just 17 years old in the 1982 drama Paradise. She was public about her disapproval of the film’s final cut that featured many racy scenes and chose not to do any promotion for it.
