While growing up in Westbury, New York, McKeon and her brother Philip appeared in more than 65 commercials. The siblings began modeling and auditioning for commercials at just two years old. The McKeon family relocated to Los Angeles after Philip landed a breakout role on the 1976 sitcom Alice. Nancy landed her own regular acting job on the 1980 police drama series Stone. She was discovered by producers from her performance on Stone and they wrote the character of Jo specifically for the young actress.
