Harry was adopted by her parents when she was 3 months old and the family grew up in Hawthorne, New Jersey. She graduated from Hawthorne High School in 1963 and studied art at Centenary College in Hackettstown, New Jersey. During this time she would commute back and forth to New York City to check out the flourishing disco and music scene there. Before creating Blondie with guitarist boyfriend, Chris Stein, Harry worked as a go-go dancer, secretary, and waitress.
