Fonda attended the Emma Willard School, an all-girls school in Troy, New York. She met tragedy early when her mother took her own life when Fonda was just 12 years old. Her father met and re-married Susan Blanchard, a young New York socialite, who was just nine years older than Fonda. She was a straight-A student at school and spent her time after hours teaching dance classes. She spent two years studying in Paris before returning to New York to pursue acting.
