Carter attended Arcadia High School in her hometown of Phoenix, Arizona. She discovered acting in early childhood and she was active in the drama club and choir throughout her high school years. Her first love, however, was music and she formed a rock band in high school called Just Us. She briefly attended Arizona State University before dropping out to pursue a career in entertainment. She was discovered by talent agents after she competed in the Miss World beauty pageant.
