Karen was born in Merrillville, Indiana, where she lived until her family relocated to Sawyer, Michigan after her mother remarried. Throughout her youth she studied ballet and tap dance, and had dreams of becoming a ballerina. She went to River Valley High School where she was on the cheerleading team, in the school’s band, and on the softball and volley ball teams. Her nickname in high school was Barbie due to her striking beauty and her sweet wholesome nature.
