Comăneci was a bundle of energy growing up in Bacau County, Romania. Her mother didn’t know how to handle her vitality and signed her up for gymnastics class when she was in kindergarten. She was discovered at just 6 years old by Bela Karolyi, a top gymnastics coach, who recognized Comăneci’s skills even at that very young age. She suggested to her mother that gymnastics was a perfect fit for the rambunctious child and the rest is history.
