As a police office, Short knew he had an obligation to serve and protect all lives. This specifically includes those who cannot look after themselves, such as children. His only intention on this fateful day was to save a life and that was what he was trying to do. As a law enforcement agent, he took an oath to use his badge as a means of protection for his community. When Short was acting, he was doing so out of impulse and what he thought was the right.
