Lt. Short was acting out of instinct and he knew that if he didn’t perform CPR to the infant, the chances of survival were very limited. Experts say that as soon as the heart ceases to beat, a person will become unconscious after about 15 seconds due to a stop in blood flow. If someone is able to perform CPR and get the heart beating again and therefore regain blood flow, they will be less likely to have long term effects, even if they lost consciousness.
